DIY Lawn Care vs Professional

How do you get your lawn looking great? Do you want to use a professional lawn care company or do you want to DIY your lawn care? There are pros and cons to each. This short blog post will go over some of the reasons you may want to use a professional lawn care service vs doing it yourself.

I know I used a professional lawn care service and was extremely disappointed with the result; in fact, they tore up my lawn. They watered the weeds which were the only thing they managed to grow in my lawn. The only thing they were able to kill was my fescue grass. Hopefully, after reading this article you will be able to better ascertain whether you want to DIY your lawn care vs a professional lawn care company.

To me, there are two types of professional lawn care companies. The first type is the ones you definitely want to stay away from. Those are the national branded lawn care service that everyone knows about and the second type is the local lawn care service that caters to the customers in the local area and specializes in the type of turf you have. An example of that type of company is GCI Turf located in North Carolina. So, check out the rest of the article and I’ll explain why there are the two different type of professional lawn care service and more importantly,

I’ll explain why you want to stay away from the national branded lawn care services.

Professional Lawn Care Services to Stay Away From

It’s no secret that I have no love whatsoever for the nationally branded lawn care companies. I rail against them every chance I get. The reason I dislike them so much is simply that they do the very least possible in order to keep getting your money.

What I mean is that their initial application does little if anything to control weeds. It’s the complaint calls that they have to come out for that they will actually put something on your lawn that may work.

So I would stay away from them and if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have used them at all.

But, if you are going to use them, here are some questions you need to ask them before you agree to their service:

  • What type of grass do I have and are your chemicals safe for it?
  • What is the concentration of your chemical (if a liquid application) and what application rate do you use?
  • What chemicals do you use?
  • Do you charge for call backs for non-effective initial treatments?

Obviously you want to know the answers already before you even ask the questions. You are not trying to educate yourself by asking them, you are trying to ascertain whether they even know what they are doing. If they give you the wrong answers, move on. Most likely they just hire some kid and tell them to go spray these lawns at these addresses and make sure you leave the bill hanging on their door.

Professional Lawn Care Service Providers to Consider

Just because you decided against using a national lawn care company does not mean that you cannot have a professional lawn care company treat and maintain your yard. In fact, this may be your best option if you do not want to do your own lawn care. If you are fortunate enough to live in North Carolina where GCI Turf operates then you have it made. But if you are like me and GCI Turf is not an option, you have some research to do to find a company that is local and knows how to treat and maintain a lawn.

If you already know what to expect, then finding one may be easier than you think.

So, how do you find a local lawn care company that will care for your yard as well as you want them to? The easiest way is to drive around the neighborhood and find lawns that already look the way you want your lawn to look.

Then ring the doorbell and simply ask. Believe me, the homeowner will be flattered, but don’t be surprised if they tell you they do it themselves. Another way to find a professional lawn care company is through family and friends.

Ask them (only if they have a nice yard) for a recommendation. Another way is finding a Facebook group in your local area that proud lawn owners belong to and post to it asking for a recommendation.

You will be surprised to learn how many professional lawn care companies are out there, but the trick is to narrow them down to the ones that actually know what they are doing. You want a professional lawn company that will personalize the lawn care plan specific to your lawn. You are not looking for a cookie cutter plan, you want a tailored plan made for your lawn and the conditions it has. They are out there, you need to find them.

It may be a bit more expensive than a traditional national brand company, but it will be a much better value. They will not only treat your lawn, but will ensure the ground is healthy as well.

If you think you have narrowed down the choices and you want to interview a couple of them, here are some questions you will want to ask:

  • What type of grass do I have and are your products safe for it?
  • What products do you use and what is the application rate?
  • Do you use Humic acid? If not, can you?
  • Will you provide me a written copy of your lawn care plan you will develop for my lawn?

What you want to ascertain is just how tailored of a lawn care plan you will have. You are looking for the professional lawn care company that carry products with them and will mix on site. What they apply to your lawn may not be what they apply to the next lawn they service.

DIY Lawn Care vs Professional

The easiest way to get a completely customized lawn care plan is to DIY your own lawn care. Not only will it be completely custom, it will be the cheapest way to go in the long run. DIY lawn care is a thought that is perhaps a bit scary at first until you do just a tiny bit of research and discover just how easy it is. Knowing what product does what and when to do applications is the hardest part, but even that is not rocket science.

DIY lawn care is actually enjoyable if you are the type of person that likes plans and seeing tangible evidence of success.

A professional lawn care company may save you time, but it may come at the cost of an underperforming and subpar looking lawn. A DIY lawn will be more time consuming, but the results will yield a lawn that is full, dark green and healthy. Your lawn will be the lawn that your neighbors will want and don’t be surprised if someone rings your doorbell and asks you who does your lawn.

It will happen and when it does you will feel immense pride and will be more than happy to provide any knowledge that you can to them.

What you will quickly discover is that there are a lot of online resources that will be at your figure tips to answer any questions that you have.

There are Facebook groups and many websites that can assist you as well. Even when it comes to finding DIY lawn care products like weed killers or a good pre-emergent, there are a variety of sources that you will become accustomed to ordering from because your local big box store will not carry the professional line of lawn care products.

So, to wrap this up, when it comes to DIY lawn Care vs professional lawn care, what you want to remember is that it is more important to know what you want from your lawn than finding a cheap lawn care provider. Stay away from the nationally branded lawn care providers if you do decide to have a professional lawn care service provider and go with a local and knowledgeable one instead.

Or better yet you can simply have a lot of fun and gain a lot of satisfaction by doing your own lawn care.
